Charles Manson, Timothy Leary, & the Animals of NIMH is the upcoming video game debut being developed by Softethix, a computer entertainment studio subsidiary of newtonn.io. It is a narrative-driven, eco-horror stealth and platforming game made with all original assets and code, drawing its vision from the cruel work of the CIA and the unsettling animal experimentation conducted in the mid-20th century. Inspired by scientists like John Calhoun and Margaret Howe Lovatt, as well as the urban legends of Charles Manson and Timothy Leary and their radically different invocations of the psychedelic culture of 1960s America, the game tells the story of a society of rats beginning to develop human-like consciousness. Confined in their strange and ever-shifting enclosure, and subjected to the ruthless curiosity of their captors, the rats seek liberation among the ghettos of the experiment chamber universe they call home. Softethix is thrilled to announce an installation for the upcoming video game at Dunkunsthalle in New York City in April, 2024. Dates for the event are still being finalized, and will be announced on social media platforms as well as softethix.io once they are confirmed. The exhibition will feature playable demo builds of the game hosted on custom stations constructed by the team. The event will also feature a screening of an animated promotional film chronicling the backstory of NIMH protagonist The Control, directed by Rafael Foster and Paul Gondry, edited and animated by Softethix’ lead 3D artist.
